I’ve spent months and months with the iPad’s software keyboard at this point, and although I can still type pretty quickly with it, I can’t do it for very long. This may have to do with my having a pair of sissy wrists, but after a good 5–10 minutes of typing, I start to feel very stiff, and even a little sore. A big part of this has to do with the inability to rest my fingers anywhere on the iPad screen, lest I accidentally press down on a key.
The Touchfire, a recently funded Kickstarter project, looks like it could be just what I need for basic typing on my tablet. The video and picture should clear things up nicely, but just in case, the Touchfire is really just a piece of stiff silicone that rests above the iPad’s landscape keyboard. It’s thin enough to let you touch the screen through the plastic, but thick enough to let you rest your hands on the keys. When you want it out of the way, you can simply flip it off of the iPad, or hide it under your Smart Cover.
The product looks like it will be released early next year, and if you’re interested in reserving one for yourself, the purchase price is about $45. The caveat is that you’ll have to pay for it in gift certificates…
