Just yesterday it was reported by AllThingsD that Apple would be involved in a media event in New York later this month. Soon after that report surfaced, a new report from TechCrunch noted that the media event would focus on publishing and iBooks.
At that time I speculated that this announcement would involve publishing, perhaps even textbooks for two reasons: First, the event was being held in New York, a major publishing center. Second, Steve Jobs’ biography noted that he was indeed working on textbooks prior to his death.
Further evidence of a textbooks announcement comes in the form of a report from MacRumors, who received information claiming that Apple filmed several interviews with textbook executives last month. Also, a blog post from Fox News’ Clayton Morris claims that the event will focus on iTunes U and textbooks.
This is one of those stories that comes out of nowhere and gels up quickly. What we know now is that there will be a media event later this month, and it will most likely involve the education business, likely textbooks.
It will be fascinating to see what Jobs had envisioned for textbooks. I suspect that it will go past the interactive books we have now; it will likely be a new way to teach and to learn. This excites me to no end.
