Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has confirmed earlier reports that the company had purchased an Israeli flash memory firm called Anobit. Apple revealed no new information other than the fact that they did indeed purchase the company. Here’s the quote from Apple spokesperson Steve Dowling:
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
It is estimated that Apple purchased Anobit for somewhere in the neighborhood of $400-500 million. The reason for the purchase seems to be unknown as well. However, Anobit, prior to the purchase was responsible for one of the memory controllers in the iPad and iPhone. Apple likely wanted that technology for greater control. The question now, is why? I suspect we’ll find out soon enough.
