Steam for iPhone is out – or, rather, it’s percolating. The free app will eventually allow everyone with a Steam account to chat with their steamy friends and buy steamy games (for PC and Mac) straight from the iPhone, but right now it’s really just a beta opt-in. Downloading the app and signing into your Steam account will tell Valve, “why, certainly, I would love to partake in the testing of this here mobile service”…but you won’t actually be able to do anything until your account is green-lit for the beta.
For those who don’t know what Steam is, it’s basically the iTunes of the gaming world, and it makes a lot of sense to have mobile access to the platform. The mobile app will make it easier to take advantage of killer Steam sales and also allow users to catch up with gaming friends while out and about. That isn’t just market speak either. Steam really has become a very rich social gaming platform and there are a lot of gaming pals of mine that I contact solely through Valve’s service, so I’m really looking forward to checking the whole experience out as soon as my account goes live.
