iBooks’ Night mode theme is named well enough, but it can also be a little misleading, since the white-text-on-black-background is actually a delight to use at any time of day (especially when combined with Full Screen mode). Night Mode really enhances the illusion that the text is printed right on the screen of my iPhone 4S, but it’s especially awesome on the iPad, since it causes the entire UI to melt away and become almost indistinguishable from my iPad’s black bezel.
I also think Night Mode is a major improvement over the default theme, since it tends to hide a lot of iBooks’ non-sensical skeumorphic interface. I don’t tend to be too picky about digital interfaces resembling their physical equivalents, but it never made sense to me how the Normal and Sepia themes always showed a stack of pages along the right, even if you were at the tail end of a book. Why put so much effort into animating the turning of the page, but ignore the reality that reading through a book from left to right will eventually result in all the pages being on the left?
Thankfully, Night mode (and Full Screen on the iPad) hides all of those static pages, leaving me alone with the Seravek font and the ridiculously detailed page-turning animations – which is just how I like it.
