For some time now it has been rumored that Apple has been working on an ARM-based MacBook Air. ARM is the same processor architecture used in Apple’s A4 and A5 chips that currently power the companies, iPhone and iPad lines. The main advantage of a ARM-powered MacBook Air would be the reduction in power consumption. However, there would be drop in performance as well, and all existing Mac OS X applications would not work on this hypothetical machine.
Now CNet is reporting on research conducted by research analyst Richard Gardner of Citigroup, who recently met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer. In short, what Gardner was told, is that the iPad will morph into a product that would meet the needs of a consumer who would purchase an ARM-based MacBook Air.
Of course, we’ve heard a plethora of rumors regarding the next-generation iPad. Most of these rumors point to a faster processor, better graphics, and a Retina display coming to the device. With these significant, annual advancements, I believe Apple is aggressively pushing the iPad as a replacement for traditional notebooks. At least for what most people need a computer for, the iPad is a perfect fit. Give it time, and personal computer industry will wither to a niche “pro” market. This is exciting.
