It doesn’t seem to matter whether my content is a matched song, which iTunes acknowledges is already in its database, or an uploaded song, which goes straight up to the cloud from my computer. Any song that I download to my iPhone through iTunes Match is devoid of the lyrics that I painstakingly embedded in iTunes. I tried looking the problem up last night, and it seems to be pretty common, and quite unresolved, as evidenced by this Apple Communities thread (and this one, too).

If this is an oversight, it’s a terrible one for a paid service. If it isn’t, iTunes Match should have an FAQ that explains why lyrics don’t sync like other kinds of metadata (e.g. play count, star rating). I love having lyrics with me and have taken pains to tag most of my 1600 songs, so it looks like I’ll be disabling iTunes Match on my iPhone for now and syncing with iTunes instead. The Match subscription is still worthwhile because my iPad doesn’t have the space to sync all of my music, but this was still a very disappointing discovery.
