Tweetbot for iPad  [ v 1.0 ]

Picked by: Alex Jordan

My pick this week is Tweetbot for iPad, recently reviewed here on iSource by Thomas.  Once upon a time I was a purest, and loved and used Twitter’s official applications to access the service. Since they muddled up the simplicity of the old iPhone Twitter client, I switched to Tweetbot, and couldn’t be happier. I continued to use the official Twitter client on my Mac, until I ran across Itsy. Now, I can totally abandon Twitter’s official apps, and the bad taste they left in my mouth, with the introduction of Tweetbot for iPad. It carries the same simple, clean design ascetic as the iPhone version, and it’s just darned pretty to look at. Plus, at $2.99 it’s a steal.

Band of the Day  [ v 2.0 ]

Picked by: PatrickJ

Band of The Day is a superb new iPad app that helps you discover lots of great new music. I think this is just such a good idea, and ever so well executed in this app. The app shows you an attractive full screen calendar view with a selected band highlighted for each day. Tap on any day of the month and see the band for that day. Tap once to go to the set of pages for each featured band.

On each band’s pages you can listen to a selection of tracks, browse through review and Bio sections, watch videos of the band and check out their albums. And of course there are links to buy their music as well.

The UI is flat-out gorgeous throughout the app, and the curated selection of bands it top-notch too. Did I mention it’s a free app? Who’s going to argue with free and gorgeous and chock full of great new music?

Oh, and if you only listen to one new artist today, make sure it is Nneka – a brilliant German- Nigerian soul singer

Glitz for iPhone 4/4S

Picked by: AliciaB

I’m sure you all can relate.  I bought myself a new iPhone 4S this week, in sleek sexy milky white. And my new sexy white iPhone 4S needed a new case. Something that would not hide its beauty. Something that would provide just the right amount of protection. Something that was itself sexy and white. So off we went to our favourite iDevice accessory store in Vienna – Pouchcenter.

There we saw lots of hard and soft, leather and fabric cases.  I drifted towards cases in white.  But not many fit with the same white of the iPhone 4S.  Which is really off-putting for a perfectionist like myself.

As providence would have it, I found a case that fit my tall order perfectly. Switcheasy Glitz in transparent ivory.  This is my Pick for this Week.

Already acquainted with Switcheasy through my Trig iPad case, I should not have been surprised to experience the neat compact design, sturdy build and hidden goodies packed in the box.  For EUR 28,90 I not only got a case that protects the back, edges and face of the iPhone, but also 2 screenguards, 2 headphone jack protectors, 2 connector protectors, a microfiber wipe cloth AND a universal dock adapter and stand. Amazing the stuff they packed in there.  Indeed, it was everything but the kitchen sink.

This case is really right up my alley.  I don’t have to remove it to call or charge. It looks good.  The phone looks good. What else can a geek want?

You can find Switcheasy Glitz case for iPhone 4 and 4S on the switcheasy website for US$ 27.99. Believe me the white really matches the iPhone white.

Avid Studio  [ v 1.0 ]

Picked by: Thomas

My POTW is Avid Studio for iPad, which I’ve really only begun to toy with. However, I can already say that it blows iMovie out of the water in terms of editing power and options. There are fewer transitions available (just two, really), but text seems much more flexible and positionable, and the options for audio are far more generous than in Apple’s in-house app.

The only kicker is that you need to make sure to sync your videos and photos through iTunes in the Movies or Photos tab. Dragging files right into the Avid Pro app from inside of the iTunes Apps tab will *appear* to work, but the app won’t actually be able to see anything. Ugh.

Regardless, if you’ve been looking for a more serious iPad video editor, look no further than the $5 Avid Studio for iPad. I regret my iMovie iPad purchase, but I’m genuinely excited to spend more time with Avid.

Mardi Gras Party & Parade Guide  [ v 4.6.3 ]

Picked by: Renkman

Mardi Gras and New Orleans are like peanut butter & Jelly–they just go great together.  I’ve been lucky enough to experience Mardi Gras once about ten years ago, and I had a blast.  Now this year it just so happens that it matches up with a trip my wife is taking for a work conference in New Orleans.  What better way to keep myself and my boys occupied while Mom is working hard, then to experience all that Mardi Gras has to offer.  Now I know what you’re thinking–that’s no place to take small children.  Turns out there is something for everyone.  There are family friendly parades and parties as well as music venues and wonderful southern restaurants to visit while we are there. Now of course, there are wild times to be had for the adults visiting, too.  With the Party & Parade guide you can plan out a night that’s tailor-made for your own personal style and comfort level.

One of the first things I did when I knew we were going was to download the Marty Gras Party & Parade Guide iPhone app.  Here you’ve got so much information at your fingertips.  You can

– View a list of Live Music Performances in New Orleans Updated Daily
– See who’s going to the parades
– Read comments posted and uploaded by Mardi Gras Revelers
– View photos posted live from the parades
– Listen to Mardi Gras music from Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans
– Share Favorite Spots with others via Facebook, Twitter & Foursquare Instantly
– Send Instant Messages to others with the App

I can’t think of a better resource to have at my disposal while visiting Nawlins then the Mardi Gras Party & Parade Guide, especially if you are new to the city and don’t really know your way around. Five days until we had to the Crescent City–who’s coming with us?
