It looks like some major retailers are beginning to see Apple TV supply shortages. As 9to5Mac reports, Amazon is out for 2-5 weeks although some of its 3rd party retailers still have some stock. More telling is the info they’ve got from a source at Best Buy
One of our Best Buy sources just pinged us, alerting us that Apple TV isn’t just out of stock at his store, but no more are actually shipping out to stores at all.
A customer was inquiring tonight about Apple TV. However right now we are out of stock (Which hasn’t happened since I started). Not only were we out of stock, but I was also unable to order one from our product ordering system (OMS). Product was listed as “currently unavailable”. From prior experience, this usually is associated with a product that is being “discontinued”.
These reports, along with reference to a new or upgraded Apple TV found in iOS 51. beta code, lead to speculation that we may see a new Apple TV released around the same time as the (expected) March release of the iPad 3.
This is one rumor I’d quite like to see come true. I bought the 2nd-gen Apple TV shortly after it was released, and honestly had pretty low expectations of it. To say it has been a pleasant surprise would be a big understatement. Thanks to its good standard feature set and the outstanding AirPlay functionality it gets a ton of use in our household – for everything from renting movies and TV shows to enjoying music or video podcasts over AirPlay. At $99 it’s just a superb piece of kit if you’ve got iDevices in the house.
If we do see a new model of the Apple TV, and assuming it’s a substantial upgrade to the current model, I’ll be looking to grab one up right away. How about you all? Have we got many Apple TV users here? If so, what are you thoughts on a possible new model this year?
