Report Claims Apple Working on 8-Inch Version of iPad

Screen shot 2011-02-22 at 9.28.23 PM.pngThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is working with their component suppliers to create a smaller 8-inch (diagonal) iPad model. This would be nearly two inches smaller than the current iPad size (9.7-inch diagonal), and still larger than the 7-inch Kindle Fire.

The report goes on to note that this smaller iPad would likely have a resolution similar to that of the iPad 2. That is, the same number of pixels crammed into a smaller area, and thus a richer display.

With all of that said, this does not mean Apple is bringing this device to market. Apple continuously tests new designs, and has reportedly done so in the past. However, Steve Jobs argued that the current 9.7-inch design is the minimum size needed for a good experience.

Seemingly shutting this report down, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber notes that Apple is testing different sized iPads, none of which will necessarily make it to market. In fact, he states that he “wouldn’t bet on it”.
