I haven’t gone quite as case crazy with my iPad 2 as I have with my various iPhones, and while I very much enjoy using the Adonit Writer 2, my tablet still spends a good 80% of its time with just a Gelaskin on the back and a Smart Cover on the front. That black leather Smart Cover, which ended up arriving a tantalizing week before my actual iPad 2 last year, has turned out to be an incredibly useful purchase.
I often use my Smart Cover in much the same way as other users (as a screen protector, quick landscape keyboard stand, and landscape viewing stand), but I thought I’d write about two other neat cover positions I’ve discovered over the last year.
Knee Deep In Text
The first position has to do with those moments where you’re reclined on the couch and simply want to read. The 1.3 lb iPad 2 is light, but not so light that it’s effortless to sit and hold for hours, so I’ve taken to folding the entire Smart Cover behind the device and using the friction from the micro-fiber interior to plant the tablet right on my pant leg. The position looks a little precarious, but it feels quite natural after a little while, and the soft interior of the Smart Cover really keeps the tablet from sliding right down the slope of my leg. The only conceivable downside is that you have to be wearing pants to do this, which is understandably a showstopper for some.
Mini Portrait Mode Lectern
The Smart Cover generally does a great job of supporting the iPad in landscape, but it can also do a great job of propping the tablet up in portrait mode on a flat surface. Simply take the Smart Cover off and then position it on the table, hinged-side facing you. You can then lay your iPad 2 in portrait mode right on the top of the cover so it ends up looking like a really unfair see-saw (the kind where the loser gets stuck up in the air, waiting for that horrible drop). I find this position is perfect for situations where I want to read at a table or desk, as the whole screen is tilted a little higher than it would be in landscape mode.
Those are the two Smart Cover tips I wanted to share today, but I’d be delighted to hear about more in the comments, if you’ve got any to share.
