Rocket Man Puts TTC Stops Right on Your iPhone

You know your dad is into his iPhone 4S when he starts e-mailing you about his latest App Store finds. This is exactly how I was introduced the TTC-specific map app, Rocket Man, earlier this weekend.

The app only works for the Toronto Transit Commission here in, well, Toronto, but Rocket Man is a useful enough app that it deserves a quick shout out. Rocket Man shows the standard Google Maps layout on the iPhone and iPad, but with extra emphasis on the various subway line stops, as well as the bus and streetcar stops. The indicators for the street-level transit are especially useful, as they indicate which stops correspond to which direction, and tapping on a stop will display the E.T.A of the next bus or streetcar.

Most of this information can be retrieved via the Google Maps app or even by texting specific numbers at the TTC, but Rocket Man simplifies the process, and is totally usable as a free download (the $0.99 to remove the pop-up ads really is optional). The only thing that really needs fixing is the app icon, which currently looks like a very bad MS Paint job. But if you can get past that, here’s the download link for Rocket Man on the App Store.
