I was surprised to read online this evening that Walmart would be selling the new iPad at midnight. Out of curiosity I dropped into my local Walmart at about 10 P.M. expecting to find a line. Surprisingly, there was no one there at that time for the new iPad. I spoke with the electronics department salesperson and she allowed me to begin the iPad line. I was informed by her right away that Walmart was only selling the 16GB Wifi iPad at midnight and that they only had five iPads in stock.

Killing time in the Walmart line.
The first hour was extremely boring as I remained the only person waiting in line. I killed time texting all my friends to tell them they should check out their local Walmart as well. Shortly after 11 p.m. I was finally joined in line by a couple of other Apple enthusiasts. That last hour flew by as we discussed everything from the new iPad to when 4G coverage would finally be extended to our area. The experience of waiting in line for an Apple product is something I enjoy more than the purchase itself. I have now queued in line for all three iPad releases and have enjoyed making new friends and striking up conversations at every one of them.
At 12:01 I became the first at my local Walmart to purchase the new iPad, and the night was an unexpected success. I almost felt guilty for how easy it was to score a new iPad as I thought about the long lines that are forming out in the cold at many of the Apple stores around the country. Almost. I bid farewell to my new Apple friends and headed home to catch some much needed rest. I was excited to know I didn’t have to wake up extremely early to beat the crowds for the new iPad as I had originally planned to do.
Enjoy iPad launch day everyone! For those in lines already or hitting lines in the early morning – stay safe, warm, and enjoy the camaraderie!
