It helped me decide on my purchasing the Versavu keyboard case. However, I find that while resting the iPad in landscape orientation, it’s pretty close to a 90 degree angle, so I can’t comfortably view the screen. 🙁 And, when closed, the iPad’s screen touches the keyboard, which is a no-no for me. I had called Targus specifically about this prior to purchase and they assured me that there is a slight clearance. Well, sadly, there is none and what’s worse is that the keyboard and iPad are crushed against each other when you slip the elastic band to secure it. Strongly considering returning this as the problems are functional, not cosmetic.

But I still have a question left and it’s very important since I live in Quebec. Do you know how to put the keyboard in french?

Thank you!

Hmmm. This is a tough one. The Versavu is a nice case, but I don’t think I would recommend it for what you are talking about. Even though it will allow you to rotate the iPad to into portrait orientation while in the case, it probably won’t be stable enough for you to use while standing because of its softer exterior.

There are two I would recommend, both of which I have reviewed here at iSource. First is the Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard Case for iPad 2 (or 3) by ZAGG. Because it has an aluminum base, it will be stable enough for you to type while holding it. Since it doesn’t actually hold the iPad while docked, you can use it in either landscape or portrait orientations. However, since it dosen’t hold the iPad in place, if your tripped or stumbled while typing standing up, your iPad could do flying. Something to consider there. However, it is also much less expensive, at this point. I have seen refurb models available for as low as $35.00. That’s a great deal for a very solid keyboard.

The other, and probably better fit, is the ZAGGfolio. It has a hard shell that holds the iPad in place, so it would be more protected. Also, since the keyboard is removable, it is also more versatile. While the iPad only docks in landscape orientation while inside the case, it is easy enough to slip it out, and use it with the keyboard in portrait.

Based on what you’ve laid out here, this sounds like the best balance of features and bang for your buck. It’s also available in a variety of colors, so that’s a plus, too. Hope this helps. Feel free to get back in touch if you have any more questions.

I am getting my first iPad this weekend. I will be using it to take minutes, but I also like to read a lot and would like it to prop up on desk in portrait view and I need to be able to carry it around and type with holding it in my hands to gather info from people. I was considering a keyboard case to make taking minutes, typing emails, and facebook statuses easier, but how hard would it be to carry this around in my arms to type info or to read on it. Which way do you think I should go with this? I don’t want to spend $100 on a case and then it not work for me. Thanks.

Are you talking about the row of function keys, or something like Cmnd + C to copy to the clipboard? The Versavu can do both.

As for the arrow keys, no, they don’t work in many areas of the OS. This is a limitation of iOS, not the keyboard hardware.

Can you help with the functions of some of the keys? The quick guide is of no help. I am wondering what the cmd keys are for and if the arrow keys only work for certain apps.

Thanks for your help.

No. Unfortunately not. The keyboard is meant to be permanently attached. The ZAGGfolio has a big advantage in the flexibility department.

Glad I could help. I am a very detail-oriented person, myself, so I always lean toward writing very detailed reviews. From my point of view, most of these high end cases and keyboards are well made and meet a certain standard of quality. In that case, it is the small details that really make the difference between them. If you are spending $60-100, you deserve to know exactly what you are getting, and that you will be satisfy with it.

I’ve been debating between this and the Belkin case for awhile, and your review had me leaning this way until your review of the keyboard and the strap. It is always the details that matter to me, and I’m tired of buying and being disappointed. Thanks for going into such detail, I can buy with open eyes and reasonable expectations now.

I chose the Zaggfolio for it’s more compact and carbon design. The keyboard is very close to Apple’s own and it fully protects my iPad just like the Targus does. Both are great as a case, but I think the Zagg inches forward a little more with a fantastic keyboard. Nice review on the Targus though…excellent points.
