How to set up your Medical ID in the Health app

One of the great features of Apple’s new Health app is the Medical ID.  The premise behind the Medical ID is to present first-responders and other individuals access to important contact and emergency information about an individual that may save their lives.  In addition it can also provide information about who might need to be contacted if a person become incapacitated.  The decision on what to include in the Medical ID is up to the user.  There are basic default categories listed that you can fill in, or choose to leave blank.  They include…

  • A picture of yourself
  • Your name
  • Birthdate
  • Medical conditions you feel important to share
  • Medical Notes
  • Allergies and reactions
  • Medications you are taking
  • Your spouse and/or additional emergency contacts
  • Your Blood type
  • If you are an organ donor
  • Weight
  • Height

It is important to note that can choose to show your Medical ID when your phone is locked. However, “Emergency Access” can also be toggled off at anytime by the user. Unfortunately, access to your Medical ID is not readily apparent when viewing a locked iPhone. To view this info you need to swipe the screen to the right as if you are entering your password–>then select Emergency–> then Medical ID in the bottom left corner. None of the information stored in your Medical ID is included in your Health data, nor is it shared with any other apps. Furthermore, you can choose to delete your Medical ID at any time at the bottom of the menu.
