1. Leave the apps in the iWork folder.
2. You need 10.10 or later for the new iWork apps. Since you’re on 10.6.8 the Mac App Store won’t give you the option to upgrade the iWorks apps till you’re on Yosemite.

Here is how I got it to work in Mountain Lion. In app store go to purchased tab. I saw the 3 apps there. I clicked on install and it said OS 10.10 required for latest version but it offered to download the latest compatible version. This worked without any 30 day trial.

It worked on my Mac mini with Mavericks but not on my Mac mini with Mountain Lion. Maybe you need Mavericks or higher.

Hi Polson. I followed the directions in my tutorial exactly, and had no problems. Downloaded the 09 trial, opened all three apps, then closed them. I didn’t didn’t do anything else to them at that point. I then launched the Mac App Store and looked at the “updates” tab. AT this point, the newest version was available for free. Currently in my applications folder I have both versions of the iWork suite right now.

Sorry if you didn’t like the word “exploit”–maybe loophole? If you can buy them in the Mac App Store for $20 each, then getting them for free by using a 09 “trial version” seems kind of like an exploit to me. I don’t have an earlier version on my computer. I only used the 30 day trial, which I had linked to in the post, and was able to update that way.

After installing, launching, and quitting the 3 demo apps, I removed them from the iWork09Demo folder that they were in upon downloading and have them “loose” in my Applications folder. Should I have kept them inside the iWork09Demo folder?
I am still running 10.6.8 but tried this in anticipation of upgrading to Mavericks or Yosemite.

Apple has made iWork free for a long while now, you only need an earlier version, and all the older Macs came with it. All you had to do was not delete it. Plus, the online versions are also free.
